Real Petrified Wood specimen. Petrified wood is a fossil formed when minerals replace the organic components of wood, usually with silica or calcite. The process, known as petrification, occurs underground when volcanic ash or water-saturated sediment buries wood, shielding it from oxygen and decomposition. Over millions of years, minerals crystallize within the wood's cellular structure, preserving its original shape and structure, sometimes down to the microscopic level.
